In the early days of learning how to hear God’s voice, I’d already started praying for people as I felt led. At the time of the story I’m about to tell, I was hungry to grow. So whenever and wherever I could, I asked God to highlight who He wanted me to write a word for as I went about my day. With two small children, that usually meant someone in my neighborhood.

One day I was at the local hair salon when God instantly highlighted one of the hairdressers, a young man I’ll call Ethan. I could sense Ethan’s desire to be accepted. With accentuated speech, behavior, makeup, clothes, and jewelry—on his fingers, through his ears, and in his nose—he jingle-jangled and caught the salon lights as he wildly gestured and talked. While I could feel his desperate need for love, it was Ethan’s striving attitude that spoke the loudest to me. Everything about him was saying Accept me as I am! I leaned in and asked God if this was the issue I was to address. God’s reply was spontaneous and firm: That is none of your business. I will show you what I want you to say to him.

Adequately rebuked, I turned to God’s heart for this young man. He showed me an internal vision—a moving picture in my mind’s imagination. I saw Ethan dancing and singing on rooftops with an open umbrella. Arms raised, face in a smile, he was spinning and leaping building to building, brimming with joy. The vision reminded me of the “Step in Time” dance scene in the film Mary Poppins. I still see it as I write now, and at its recollection, I always smile. I could sense the Father’s sheer delight: That’s My boy. Can you see him? I adore him. Look at him go. Look at him go. Isn’t he amazing? Isn’t he gorgeous?

I wrote as led, and then I nervously approached Ethan and said, “I’m a Christian, and I’m learning how to hear from God for others. He highlighted you, and I’ve written out something from Him, for you. Could I share it with you, please?”

His response was immediate. “Absolutely!”
